Cynthia E. Dennie papers, 1845-1907.

The papers consist of letters to Cynthia Dennie from various relatives as well as letters sent to her parents-in-law, but the bulk of the collection consists of letters from John Dennie and John Hancock Dennis. Dennis's letters to his sister describe his life in California, primarily his work and political campaigns. He reports on California politics during the Civil War and describes the Sacramento flood of 1862, which forced the legislature to move to San Francisco. Letters after 1863 comment on Nevada gold and silver mining. The 1870s and 1890s are represented by a few scattered letters to his niece which focus on family with some mention of national politics. Along with Dennis's letters to his family are a few letters to or from friends and newspaper clippings about Dennis. The papers for 1907 consist of a printed death notice and the correspondence of Mary Taylor concerning Dennis's affairs. John Dennie's letters to his fiancee and wife comment on his life in California, but emphasize his feelings about his family. Louis Dennis's letters to his sister describe farm and mill enterprises as well as events and feelings in Union County, Kentucky, on the eve of the Civil War.
